Love?

When I first saw you,

I saw forever in your eyes.

I saw my future

my dreams

my children

my life

We were young but what we had was real and true

the strength of my feelings reflected in you

When I first saw you,

I saw happily ever after in your eyes

I saw the white dress and embossed invitations

The I Dos and the scrumptious reception

We were a little older

but time had not extinguished our flame

for it still shone and burned eternal

When I first saw you,

I saw forever in your eyes…

But now there are bills to pay

and mouths to feed

my tired gaze reflected in your eyes

Ugh! Forever wasn’t meant to be this hard

Stretch marks and distended stomach

Scarred womb and hanging breasts

My essence now airy and roomy,

has lost its virginal elasticity of youth

When I first saw you,

I saw forever in your eyes

But now my peripheral vision wise with age

sees all the flaws

I once dismissed as minor inflections

on your perfect character

because in my eyes, nothing could mire

my Prince Charming come to life

Greying pallor and softened abdomen

Atrophied muscles and greying temples

have all removed the haze of awestruck smoke

clouding my gaze

When I first saw you,

I saw forever in your eyes.

Signed papers and bitter words

courtrooms and lawyers

your eyes reflecting the pain and regret, heartache and neglect,

found in my relieved gaze

no more pretences

of a future we no longer see

What happened to us?

What happened to our love?

to growing old with ten fingers and toes

to being retired globetrotters

to joy filled visits with our tiny reincarnations

to holiday visits

to escorted walks down aisles

watching with pride

as the next generation

tried to recreate our love

When I first saw you,

I saw forever in your eyes

I saw the white picket fence and the wrinkled skin

What happened to our forever love?

The promises we made, to forever love and cherish?

All that we vowed to share?

All that we could and would be?

All that we should have been?

What happened to forever, my love?

What happened my love?

My love?

Love?
